Three weeks before the first regular-season game, the useful checks are narrow: confirm the schedule is final, confirm which Kalshi contracts are actually open, and read the settlement rules before committing capital. This guide covers both sides of the 2026-27 NBA tipoff week, pairing the league's official key dates with a Kalshi market snapshot captured September 29, 2026, the same day training camps opened.
Update, October 21, 2026: opening night is complete. All three October 20 games are FINAL on the NBA's games page — Pistons 121, Celtics 113; 76ers 106, Knicks 100; Thunder 116, Spurs 104 — and the morning-after Kalshi recheck found every NBA event still open: 30 champion markets, 53 MVP markets, 30 Cup champion markets and 30 in each Cup qualifier event, none settled. The official finals and the dated market snapshot are recorded in the October 21 update section below.
Primary sources checked: the official NBA key dates page (updated September 26, 2026), the NBA games page for October 20 (final results), the 2026-27 schedule announcement, the Kalshi market rules and market outcomes pages, and the CFTC filing on Kalshi's regulated exchange status. Everything below reflects that snapshot date, and availability can change after it. The page was rechecked two days before tipoff, with fresh reads between 05:32 and 05:36 UTC on October 18, 2026, and again the morning after tipoff: on October 21 the league's games page confirmed all three finals and the Kalshi API was reread between 05:35 and 05:45 UTC. The recheck section and the October 21 update record what changed.
The 2026-27 season started as scheduled, and the morning after, all three October 20 games show FINAL on the NBA's own games page: the Detroit Pistons beat the Boston Celtics 121-113 at Little Caesars Arena, the Philadelphia 76ers beat the New York Knicks 106-100 at Madison Square Garden, and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the San Antonio Spurs 116-104 at Frost Bank Center. All three were national broadcasts on NBC, matching the key-dates page. Exact scores were cross-checked against the ESPN scoreboard feed; the result claim itself rests on nba.com's FINAL status, and game IDs 0022600001 through 0022600003 identify the three contests on the league site. Detroit, Philadelphia and Oklahoma City open 1-0; Boston, New York and San Antonio open 0-1.
One game settles nothing, and nothing on Kalshi has settled. The October 21 morning-after recheck of the API found every NBA event still open: KXNBA-27 with 30 active champion markets, KXNBAMVP-27 with 53, KXNBACUP-26 with 30, and 30 active markets in each of the two Cup qualifier events (KXNBACUPQUAL-26FIN and KXNBACUPQUAL-26KO). The event-detail read now returns mutually_exclusive: true for KXNBA-27, a field the September 29 list view did not carry. Settlement sources still point to the league (nba.com), and every close_time remains a trading-deadline field, not a settlement date. Public order-book fields were empty in this read, so this page still carries no prices — and one game out of 82 is not a champion-market signal, exactly as the guidance below already said.
A recheck on October 18, 2026 found the tipoff picture unchanged. The NBA's key-dates page — updated by the league on October 18 — still lists the same three October 20 opening games with the same tip times and NBC/Peacock coverage, and rosters are still due October 19 at 5 p.m. ET. No game on the opening slate has been added, moved, or postponed since the September 29 snapshot.
On the Kalshi side, all five NBA events from the September 29 snapshot were still open at the recheck, now with exact market counts: KXNBA-27 still lists 30 active team champion markets with the same 2029-07-30 close_time trading deadline; KXNBAMVP-27 has 53 active markets (close_time June 30, 2028); KXNBACUP-26 has 30 active markets; and the two Cup qualifier events, KXNBACUPQUAL-26KO and KXNBACUPQUAL-26FIN, each list 30 active markets. None of these markets has settled, and every close_time remains a deadline field, not a settlement date.
The recheck also confirmed the season structure around tipoff: Emirates NBA Cup group play still begins October 30 on Prime Video, the league calendar adds context the original snapshot did not carry — a November 7 NBA Mexico City Game (Denver Nuggets vs. Indiana Pacers) and NBA Paris and Manchester games on January 14 and 17, 2027 (Spurs vs. Pelicans) — and the playoff start now appears on the key-dates page as April 17. NBA Finals dates are still absent from the league calendar, so any champion-market timing assumption should still come from the contract rules text, not a guessed postseason schedule.
Nothing in the recheck changes the guidance below: the schedule is final, the market set is stable two days out, and the pre-trade checklist stands.
The NBA's key-dates page is the controlling calendar source, and its October 20 start matches the schedule announcement verified in August, so the date is settled on both official pages. The broader season-start overview lives in the earlier season-start market checks; this page is the final countdown checklist. The run-up to tipoff looks like this:
The confirmed slate, all on NBC/Peacock per the official key-dates page, finished like this (finals per the league's games page):
Final roster cuts land the day before tipoff, so injury news and rotation decisions can break quickly in the 24 hours after the Oct. 19 deadline. Traders with season-long positions should treat opening-night results as one game out of 82, not as a signal about how a champion market settles.
Entering the 2026-27 NBA tipoff week, the KXNBA series showed exactly one open event at snapshot: KXNBA-27, "2027 Pro Basketball Champion", with 30 team markets (KXNBA-27-ATL, KXNBA-27-BOS, and one ticker per franchise). Settlement language follows a single template with the team name swapped in. Rules verbatim, using the Atlanta placeholder: "If Atlanta wins the 2027 Pro Basketball Finals, then the market resolves to Yes."
Four related events were also open, with no market counts pulled that run; the October 18 recheck counted them: 53 active MVP markets in KXNBAMVP-27, 30 active Cup champion markets in KXNBACUP-26, and 30 active markets in each of the two qualifier events, all still open two days before tipoff.
Cup markets get a full treatment in the Emirates NBA Cup schedule and market checks, and the team-by-team champion breakdown sits in the 2027 champion futures guide. This page is static by design: it carries no prices, volumes, or implied probabilities, and current availability must come from Kalshi directly.
Every one of the 30 champion markets lists a close_time of 2029-07-30T14:00:00Z with can_close_early set to true. The close_time field is a trading deadline only. It is not a championship date and not a settlement date. Resolution follows the rules text quoted above, meaning the 2027 Pro Basketball Finals outcome, and markets can close well before any deadline field. One observed detail: the list view showed no mutually_exclusive field for KXNBA-27, so treat that as an API observation rather than a rule claim.
One gap matters for timing analysis: when this page was published, the NBA had not announced 2027 playoff or Finals dates. The October 18 key-dates update lists a playoff start of April 17 (the league page labels it "NBA Playoffs 2026," an apparent typo for the 2027 postseason), but NBA Finals dates remain unannounced. Any assumption about when a champion market resolves should come from the Kalshi rules text, not from an imagined postseason calendar.

Tuesday, October 20, 2026, per the NBA's official key-dates page, reconfirmed unchanged on the league's October 18 update, two days before tipoff. The start matches the schedule announced in August, so the calendar is final on that point. Rosters are set the day before, October 19 at 5 p.m. ET, and training camps opened September 29, the same day this guide's Kalshi snapshot was captured. The season opened on that date as scheduled; the official opening-night results are recorded in the October 21 update.
All three games are FINAL on the NBA's games page: the Detroit Pistons beat the Boston Celtics 121-113, the Philadelphia 76ers beat the New York Knicks 106-100 at Madison Square Garden, and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the San Antonio Spurs 116-104. The games tipped at 3 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. ET, all on NBC/Peacock, as the league's key-dates page listed.
In the October 21, 2026 morning-after recheck, KXNBA-27 still had 30 active team champion markets; KXNBAMVP-27 had 53 active MVP markets; KXNBACUP-26 had 30 active Cup champion markets; and the two Cup qualifier events had 30 active markets each. None has settled. Availability changes, so verify current listings and rules on Kalshi before trading.
No. The 2029-07-30 close_time on all 30 team markets is a trading deadline field, not a settlement date, and each market can close early. The rules resolve on the 2027 Pro Basketball Finals outcome, phrased as "If [team] wins the 2027 Pro Basketball Finals, then the market resolves to Yes." Read the live rules text before relying on any date.
